Philosophy of Community
Building alternative networks
One of Independent Arts & Media's fundamental goals is to create a network of mutually supportive, cross-promotional, noncommercial media and arts projects, programs, organizations and producers.
We pursue this goal in direct response to the for-profit media/entertainment industry's monopolistic control of print, broadcast and, increasingly, Internet media outlets.
And, while we respect and admire the efforts of large-scale civic art museums and music venues, we recognize that the vast majority of artists and musicians in a given community will never have their works presented in those venues.
Rather than work for commercial media networks and their affiliates and franchises, we are establishing a nonprofit network of peers -- a community that can cross-promote and share works and resources.
Rather than focus on monolithic institutions that exalt artistic and musical classics, we are dedicated to small/mid-sized, community-based presentation and exhibition venues that support emerging, underground, nontraditional, visiting, noncommercial artists and musicians.
It's ambitious, but we're in good company.
