NEWSDESK.org presents, as a resource for voters in San Francisco and for election-watchers nationwide, a pair of exclusive interviews with San Francisco mayoral candidates Matt Gonzalez and Gavin Newsom.

The candidates were given identical sets of questions about public health, education, transportation, toxics remediation, energy, homelessness, the arts and more:

Gavin Newsom: "I think we have some ideologues on the school board, and I don't see the school board right now, particularly three members, working at all very well with our superintendent. I think that's a major problem."

Matt Gonzalez: "A superintendent doesn't like a couple of school teachers telling her what to do, but the truth is they're very well-informed, and have really improved the discourse in the school district."
The hotly contested runoff election culminates with a vote on December 9. At stake is Democratic Party ascendancy in one of its traditional strongholds, as the Green Party aspires to capture one of the highest-profile municipal offices in California and the U.S.

Tune in to our radio partners at 90.3 FM KUSF, San Francisco, on Sunday Dec. 7 from 4 to 6pm, for a broadcast of both interviews, plus live commentary by local academics and political observers on the election, and the prospects for San Francisco regardless of who wins.
